Holiday Exchange

i rarely rarely bake at home (the exact science of measuring out ingredients bums me out), but when the manager of one of the newer teams i support at work asked me if i wanted to participate in their annual holiday cookie exchange, I thought why not. it would give me a chance to interact and get to know these new guys better. heck, it might even be fun!

it did turn out to be loads of fun…on the day of the exchange. every day prior to that day was absolutely full of anxiety and despair.

i should have read the small print before committing, but oh wells. live and learn. you see, we had two weeks to make a dozen homemade (key word) cookies for every person who signed up on the exchange list. we were to not buy cookies straight off the grocery store/bakery shelf and present them as such. there needed to be a personal touch made to the batches (ie oreos dunked in milk chocolate). there ended up being 12 names by the end. i am poor at mathematics, but I did at that point realize i would need to make 144 homemade cookies.

what the heck was i going to make that did not require complex mixing and numerous ingredients??!! the idea of baking alone stressed me out, but to multiply that by the 144 i needed to produce…oye ve.

what did i end up doing you ask?

i love the site. i came across this recipe for pretzel turtle bites during my multi-day, multi-hour research and readers…this recipe suited my non-baker self perfectly. it is easier than easy, YUMMY, and ingredient wise, all ya need is a bag of mini pretzels, a few bags of rolos and a bag of pecans. presto … homemade cookies (i suppose it is most like “cookies” but they still count!)

the hardest part of the entire ordeal…unwrapping three bags of rolos!

did i mention they were yumz? :o)

however….the best (or worst depending on how you look at it) thing about this…

i shared them with my office desk mate and bossman and then with guys who work the security desk in my condo building. the rest i kept for myself to eat. which i did. it was the holidays afterall!

umm... i am still eating cookies to this day even though i know i should probably not. how long am i allowed to use the holidays as an excuse? i will take your silence as a sign that there is no end date. yay!

Do you buy a stack of books which end up at home still in an unread stack? I do. So many adventures awaiting nimble fingers at the ready to run through the pages.

(there might/might not be a theme presently to what i prefer to read)

Don’t get me wrong, I read a lot, but not as often as I would like to. It takes me a bit longer than preferred, sometimes, to get from one book to another do to various reasons.
This is the slowski banner of my life on most occasions.

Sometimes the reluctance stems from the remnants of the previous story still lingering on my mind and in my heart. Quite honestly, it is hard to disengage from the resulting entanglement of having been lost in another world, in someone else's story. It is like a rollercoaster ride of emotions one experiences while buried within the chapters, and it takes a while to recover. Having been totally immersed in the plot, it does not always entail an easy restoration of "normalcy" ... to complete the grieving process, so to say. DO NOT get me started on the Hunger Games trilogy. All of that arena games business had me an anxious mess throughout the whole ordeal…and i loved every second of it. Seriously.

Usually, you will find me in the middle of a full blown A.D.D. situation, where I have started 2 or 3 different books and read in an overlapping way. Before I finish one, another will strike my fancy, and before you know it, I am in the middle of two different storylines. I finish them all, mind you, just not in an expected, orderly manner. As different moods strike, I pick up one of the started novels and beginning reading from where I last left off. I heard somewhere that Peace is to be found in finishing something you have started prior to moving onto something new. Codswallop. It must have been written by someone who is a neat freak, and finds discomfort in anything in disorder and could possibly be borderline OCD. Not that any of that is a bad thing. It just does not apply to everyone. That being said, it's funny how this does not apply to all aspects of my life...just some things...like reading novels. Strange yeah? Yeah. *sigh*

Other times, the delay is due to life getting in the way. You would think that the train rides to/from work would be an opportune time to read, but nopes. I’m so tired at the crack of dawn, I can barely prep my mind to endure the upcoming long day. And, well, the train ride home, tis me usually listening to my ipod and unwinding after a lengthy day. I'm usually too tired Mondays-Fridays to have anything other than sleep take over when I am home. Tis tough to get a full novel read in the in-between hours and on weekends, but the amazing plots cannot be withheld. So, surge forward when possible. Oddly enough, this reflects in my blogging life too. (I was able to manage these past few posts due to a two week holiday time off. LOVE!)

Right now, i am finishing up book #3 in Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments trilogy: “City of Glass”

I am not one to write reviews. Memories of high school English class rush forward. Ones where you are asked to write papers on a book the class recently completed reading. If a there is a story that compels me to be so inclined, it will be considered at that time. So far, this series is entertaining with an interesting context, but the not exactly impelling. The more I entered this world Clare has created, the more Potter-ness I experience. There are more than a few parallel similarities with the two. If you have read both series of books (Harry Potter and The Mortal Instruments) and feel what I'm sayin' here, give me a shout out.

The other book I was reading simultaneously with City of Glass was one a good friend of mine had read on another friend’s recommendation. She talked about it nonstop for days. She went on and on about it and said that I had to-had to-had to read it. Tis a nonfiction book which is not usually something I tend to gravitate towards when placed in the middle of a Barnes & Noble. But her insisting got the better of me, and, man oh MAN, am I glad I caved. SO SO SO glad I did. Thanks Jen!

I finished reading this in a handful of hours last week. It is an extremely quick read (that says a lot coming from me whose personal life banner flashes “slowski”) which I started before going to bed one night and finished up the next morning. And, I cannot emphasize enough how thoroughly engaging it is.
I am agnostically ~~anti-religious~~ non-religious...a transcendentalist to degree. I believe there is a higher power which is all around us, as well as, within each individual being. I believe in karmic energies and reincarnation. I acknowledge the existence of auras and realms which lay in the inbetweens of time and physical-ness. There is much to learn and understand still. Knowledge is a powerful thing.
Keep an open mind to potentials and possibilities outside of what you have physically seen. For those who follow one religion or another, keep that belief, but step outside of the walls of what churches/temples/etc house once in a while. Each religion, more or less, says that their way is the only way to reach whatever lies beyond; however, you know that not everyone else shares the same beliefs. Are they incorrect and on the wrong path? Walk in another's shoes and experience with an open mind. See the colorful spectrum in its full glory. Try to think of what lies outside of the boundaries of your faith. You do not have to understand what lies elsewhere, but know that there IS an elsewhere. That's a start. To understand, you must know.
Hmmm...whoa. That was more intense than I expected it to be, but I felt an eager persuasion to pursue the topic and went with it. I might not be religious, but I do consider myself to be deeply spiritual. Do you believe in past lives? What are your ideas on what happens to a soul after it leaves the human body shell? If any of you have read this book, or the ones mentioned above, I am eager to hear your thoughts.

the rest of the country seems to be getting hit with large amounts of heavy weather, but tis mild around these parts (knock on wood). i am not complaining, but am a lil saddened by not finding a blanket of white covering the surfaces of the branches and buildings.

It is that time of year again when Persephone is to return to Hades. As all cycles have a beginning point, there must also be an ending point. The Mother must have her turn to say it is time to hunker down and find downtime to regroup and reform before being able to start anew with a fresh start and beginnings in the Spring.

*the word is that this is our last winter solstice as we have known it to be in the past 100s of years. the next one falls on December 21st, 2012. for those of you who are as nerdy as I, will probably recognize that date as the end of the world according to mayan calendars. now…how much of the theory I believe and don’t believe leaves many gaps and unanswered questions behind. this is mostly due to because no one really knows what tomorrow holds. not really. only speculations and a multitude of hypotheses exist. needless to say, a momentous greatness is abound.

i find carnivals and carnival folk and their lifestyle compellingly attractive. it is an attraction like no other. i am completely besotted by it all: the gypsy lifestyle; the sense of family with those not blood related to you; the oddity of human beings magnified ten-fold and presented to the world in a certain fashion; the horror and fascination in people who will pay to see a man with three arms; the thrill of the unknown, the mystery and magic as one walks down the midway.

when HBO aired Carnivàle back in 2003, i did not subscribe to HBO nor had i heard of the show. since then, the premium channel has become one of my favorite with a great line-up of friggin' addictive shows ("True Blood" anyone?). a couple of months ago, after finding out that i could access HBO GO via my smartphone (or personal laptop), my world has rocked by the sheer wonderment to what is available out there at the tip of my fingers, from any place, at any time. At the time, I was reading Twilight Eyes, and was in awe of those who called fairgrounds home. i have been known to be more than a little superstitious and easy to recognize coincidences and fate. which is why when Carnivàle presented itself to me, resistance was not even a consideration. Funny how that happens, yeah?

to sum it up well, here is a brief description of the TV series written by a contributor to the IMDb page:

"1934, America. The Dustbowl. A fugitive named Ben Hawkins finds refuge within a traveling carnival comprised of a tarot card reader and her catatonic/telekinetic mother, a blind mentalist, a bearded lady, and conjoined twins, amongst others. The carnival is owned by the mysterious and unseen Management, who has designs on the young Hawkins, for the boy is concealing an untapped gift: he can heal the lame and raise the dead--at a price. Ben also finds himself disturbed by cryptic and prophetic dreams, which he shares with a Methodist preacher in California, Brother Justin Crowe. Brother Justin, convinced by his dreams he is following God's will, has begun to practice his own extraordinary talents, although the preacher's plans increasingly lead to disturbing and tragic consequences. In this "last great age of magic," Ben Hawkins and Justin Crowe are moving toward a great conflict between Good and Evil, although it not yet clear on which sides these men will stand."

sadly enough, the show was demised at the end of the second season due to a plot which was becoming slightly convoluted....multiple storylines force to cohesively work as one, which was being done unsuccessfully. if you can overlook the flaws, the entirety of the concept is wonderful! i know i had quickly become a fan, hooked solid, after watching just the intro of episode 1, season 1...

it was not till after i was already reeled in after having watched the first 3 episodes back to back that i went hunting down all the info i could on the show. that is when i found out about the last season being the second. talk about being heartbroken.

the cinematography and set design mixed in with the historical aspects of the show is extraordinarily placed within with the plot: the 'dust bowl' is definitely portrayed brilliantly and uniquely it's own character here; the strategically placed symbolism is outstanding (sorta makes me want to re-watch and see what things i might have missed previously); the faces of the actors, some who i barely recognized, to new-to-me faces i will now never forget; the distinctive designs of each carnival acts plush wagons; the flamboyantly over-the-top fashion of the show folk compared to that of those who attend the fairgrounds and those town folk who cannot afford to attend...all wonderfully created.

i was afraid that the producers would have left everyone hanging before even remotely reaching an ending to the story they were weaving. but, in an oddly pleasing way, they did not do to shabbily. granted, there were loose ends left untied, but i suppose it could have been worse. all in all, thoroughly worth a gander if you as enamored by this stuff as i am.

*** and i do consider this particular lifestyle to be different from that of a circus. i am more curious about people and not so much in animals being caged and trained to do tricks.

i am such a creature of habit and not a always a pleasant morning person.

on days i go into the office, i am up at the crack of dawn...well, before the crack of dawn really; 3:30am to be exact. that is after having snoozed for a half hour. my public transport leaves at 5:40am and tis about a 5 city-block walk away. i have a routine set up every morning which goes from getting up, getting ready, and heading out the door at 5am. i go to the only place open at that hour, Dunkin Donuts, to get myself a LARGE turbo with extra sugar-regular cream. even though i do not go into the office everyday, the kids at this DD know my drink and start making it when i walk in. gotta love being a 'regular' and loyal customer somewhere.

i make it to the train depot usually as the train pulls in, which is perfect timing because i have a specific car and specific seat where i sit. tis the best car IMHO. it doesn't hurt that the conductor is my favorite one around and one i have a crush on. he's so friggin' handsome!

before i digress, the reason for this post...considering the early hour of the day, the beginning of a long work day, i prefer my morning train commute to be peaceful and quiet. i usually read a small local paper, write in my journal, listen to my ipod and take sneaky peaks at my conductor crush. i am not much of a sleeper on the commute mostly out of fear of sleeping right past my stop.
there is always a rude commuter who has to talk on his/her mobile, and god knows who the heck wants to talk about crap so early in the morning. god to heaven knows that no one else wants to hear it! there are also people who get on and have to have long winded chats with coworkers/friends too. is it a long lost friend that you have to catch up with at that very moment? pet peeve? yeps.
that is why when i saw this on Rebecca's blog and had to re-post it here.

it is a Laura Callaghan print that i'd buy in an instant. tis perfect! however, it seems that her shop is presently not stocked. :o(

good thing Laura has a blog full of her skills as an artist to bide time away while waiting for her shop to restock.

Fall is my favorite time of year. I call Spring and Autumn the in-between seasons because they seem to not last as long as either Summer nor Winter, especially not here in the midwest in recent years. Spring here in Chicago is super short, and it meshes itself with Summer so thoroughly, most of the time, that it's hard to distinguish between the two.

Autumn is distinctly unique in that you know when it comes knocking at your door by the exuberant colors sitting along the branches of the trees. Also, the air is crisper and clearer. Allergies have been horrendous this year, and with these previous warm months, there was a thickness in the air creating a lot of sneezing, sniffling, wheezing, watery eyes.
Now, finally, I can once again inhale the coolness deep into my lungs. Refreshing!

Dark Shadows

I don't know if I realized Tim Burton was remaking of the 60s cult classic, Dark Shadows, til now. Talk about being pleasantly shocked! What isn't so shocking is that it stars both Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter along with a slew of who's-who from filmdom playing the other quirky characters.

Honestly, I do not remember ever having seen the 60s version, but the 90s version clearly comes to memory as a TV show my family watched together. Sadly it only lasted one season, but I recall my sister and I avidly watching in both arduousness and fear. I suppose that is the draw of vampires though, yeah? The gorgeous Barnabas who was strangely both ominous and desirable at the same time....the ideal "bad boy" (if you don't mind the fangs) but with a cynicism that could only come with age. In this case, that would be well over a 200 years of living life type of age.

As with any Burton flick, tis one that is eagerly anticipated now. I mean, seriously, take a look at the pic below. The clothes alone has my heart racing. Peter pan collars, pantsuits, tweeds, capes, sheer, high necks...eeps!

The retro essence is in full force with hopefully adequate due diligence made to keep it close enough to the original. With that said, I would personally want this movie to be released with ample amounts of Burton's aesthetically appealing decriptness via his brilliant creative interpretation. Cannot wait!

"The Promised Land"

To write an ode, or not to write an ode. THAT has been a question I'd been considering for a few months now. Today's post might not be even remotely insightful, but tis a something which is better than nothing, right? Right. :o)
I had an extra day off today to recoup from the long weekend (no, not really recoup, just another day to sloth around and sleep in), and was able to catch the Nate Berkus Show rerun with Oprah touring her seaside home, an estate dubbed "The Promise Land." I miss her. Out of all the major occurrences of the month, heck of a lifetime, took place this month when her daytime show came to an end. Hate her or love her, but you can't deny the positive influence she's been on this planet.
Were you an Oprah fan? Did you get the opportunity to watch this Nate episode?
I live in an urban forest with the sounds of sirens and cars outside rather than birds and a waterfall. Everyone needs to have a sacred place, a place of peace, where you regather your thoughts/feelings/energies, a place where you refuel your soul. There's a lot to be noted from those who understand what environment is personally grounding. Knowing how long and when you need to be in that environment goes to show how well you know yourself.
I had a heated discussion with a coworker who thought everyone who was an Oprah supporter was a drone blinded by a money-hungry female. He (yes, it seems typically, it's usually a male) stated that she was someone who wanted to build an empire, but couldn't have an empire without minions to puppeteer around. Needless to say, it was not a discussion either of us walked away from feeling any different. One thing I've learned about judgemental people in general, my own included, is that the judgement represents the one doing the judging and rarely the person being judged.

I love the woman. Love her to death. Personally, she's been a teacher, a parent, and the bestest of friends and it is difficult to explain love. I can tell you all the reasons why I love her, but I know I can't make you love her as I do.

I was surfing around online when I came across these...the "benched cut out platforms." One hears about the comforts of arch support, and god knows, my feet screechingly revolt if I'm not gellin' my way along in heels. These platforms frighten me due to the unknown factor and equally intrigue me because they are so...so, Jeffrey. It is possible that you accidentally forgot the entire middle part of the platform, but that would just be sort of rude of me to point out. You still rock my world. Love.

Dear Seeking Wisdom,

Stop worrying about whether you’re fat. You’re not fat. Or rather, you’re sometimes a little bit fat, but who gives a shit? There is nothing more boring and fruitless than a woman lamenting the fact that her stomach is round. Feed yourself. Literally. The sort of people worthy of your love will love you more for this, sweet pea.

In the middle of the night in the middle of your twenties when your best woman friend crawls naked into your bed, straddles you, and says, You should run away from me before I devour you, believe her.

You are not a terrible person for wanting to break up with someone you love. You don’t need a reason to leave. Wanting to leave is enough. Leaving doesn’t mean you’re incapable of real love or that you’ll never love anyone else again. It doesn’t mean you’re morally bankrupt or psychologically demented or a nymphomaniac. It means you wish to change the terms of one particular relationship. That’s all. Be brave enough to break your own heart.

When that really sweet but fucked up gay couple invites you over to their cool apartment to do ecstasy with them, say no.

There are some things you can’t understand yet. Your life will be a great and continuous unfolding. It’s good you’ve worked hard to resolve childhood issues while in your twenties, but understand that what you resolve will need to be resolved again. And again. You will come to know things that can only be known with the wisdom of age and the grace of years. Most of those things will have to do with forgiveness.

One evening you will be rolling around on the wooden floor of your apartment with a man who will tell you he doesn’t have a condom. You will smile in this spunky way that you think is hot and tell him to fuck you anyway. This will be a mistake for which you alone will pay.

Don’t lament so much about how your career is going to turn out. You don’t have a career. You have a life. Do the work. Keep the faith. Be true blue. You are a writer because you write. Keep writing and quit your bitching. Your book has a birthday. You don’t know what it is yet.

You cannot convince people to love you. This is an absolute rule. No one will ever give you love because you want him or her to give it. Real love moves freely in both directions. Don’t waste your time on anything else.

Most things will be okay eventually, but not everything will be. Sometimes you’ll put up a good fight and lose. Sometimes you’ll hold on really hard and realize there is no choice but to let go. Acceptance is a small, quiet room.

One hot afternoon during the era in which you’ve gotten yourself ridiculously tangled up with heroin you will be riding the bus and thinking what a worthless piece of crap you are when a little girl will get on the bus holding the strings of two purple balloons. She’ll offer you one of the balloons, but you won’t take it because you believe you no longer have a right to such tiny beautiful things. You’re wrong. You do.

Your assumptions about the lives of others are in direct relation to your naïve pomposity. Many people you believe to be rich are not rich. Many people you think have it easy worked hard for what they got. Many people who seem to be gliding right along have suffered and are suffering. Many people who appear to you to be old and stupidly saddled down with kids and cars and houses were once every bit as hip and pompous as you.

When you meet a man in the doorway of a Mexican restaurant who later kisses you while explaining that this kiss doesn’t “mean anything” because, much as he likes you, he is not interested in having a relationship with you or anyone right now, just laugh and kiss him back. Your daughter will have his sense of humor. Your son will have his eyes.

The useless days will add up to something. The shitty waitressing jobs. The hours writing in your journal. The long meandering walks. The hours reading poetry and story collections and novels and dead people’s diaries and wondering about sex and God and whether you should shave under your arms or not. These things are your becoming.

One Christmas at the very beginning of your twenties when your mother gives you a warm coat that she saved for months to buy, don’t look at her skeptically after she tells you she thought the coat was perfect for you. Don’t hold it up and say it’s longer than you like your coats to be and too puffy and possibly even too warm. Your mother will be dead by spring. That coat will be the last gift she gave you. You will regret the small thing you didn’t say for the rest of your life.

You know the saying about lemons and lemonade?
Well this post is about bananas. I buy bananas every week. I buy FOUR. Not ten. I try to not buy more than I know I'll be able to eat in the week. However, there must be something in my air, because these brown and get mushy before the week is up. I know, I know. They are still edible and even sweeter to the taste when they turn all dimpled and brown. I am not a fan of the texture once they get to this stage. I am also not a huge fan of throwing them out either. So, what do I do, you ask?

I make banana bread, of course!!
With almonds and chocolate chips.

A bubbly surprise

These are from this past rain filled Sunday, when a certain someone came by with a surprise treat...bfast and a bottle of bubbly! Precisely, seven days from Valentine's Day is my birthday. This would make today that day. The first thing I asked myself when I realized the day was fast approaching was if I feel all of my 37 years. Some days I feel more like 80, but usually, yeah, I do feel my age. Surprisingly, or not so to those who know me, I do not have any desire to be at an age younger than I am presently. You see, I believe that who I am, and where I am, at this very moment in time, is where I am meant to be.
Who could be malcontent with the universe on this fact?
Not I. :o)
All of last week was spent at home dealing with and getting over a really, really bad chest cold. It was a flu of some sort which even now still lingers in the background. It makes its persistent presence known when I laugh and cough as I have to take a moment to consciously catch my breath.

The tulips were a gift for V-Day, but my non-existent green thumb let them die a few days after cutting the stems and placing them into a simple vase. Now, before you think I am purposefully the murderer of plants, these deaths were purely accidental. If I was not plagued with a demon cold, the loverly purples and yellows would have lasted at least an additional day or two. At least.
Since the week leading up to my b-day was spent in bed with the blinds and volume down, the remainder of February will be spent as my b-day week. I don't go all out as celebrations of grandeur are not really my scene, but I do try and enjoy my new year with small treats and lot of introspection (the latter is a daily activity, but the birth date, the new year brings on more of a varied version).
